Rather than being one single, distinguishable aspect of what we do, comprehensive and effective pastoral care underpins a pupil’s entire experience at Harrow Hengqin.
We are focused on ensuring that our pupils flourish not just academically, but also personally and socially. Harrow Hengqin pupils will be kind, resilient, confident young people, equipped with the emotional intelligence and leadership skills required to lead successful adult lives.
The pastoral provision at Harrow Hengqin revolves around the House and Tutor systems. Pupils are all members of a House under the care of a Housemaster or Housemistress. Each pupil also belongs to a Tutor group and meets daily with their tutor, who is the principal liaison between the pupil, teachers, school and home.
Pupils will discover their talents and fulfil their potential in a range of co-curricular activities; be challenged and stretched through our Super Curriculum programme; develop values of fellowship and humility through Community Service activities and thrive as part of a strong and supportive House community. All of these elements of school life, which are unique to a Harrow education, form part of our pastoral provision and they support our pupils to thrive and develop as individuals.
Close Personal Tutoring is a crucial component of our pastoral provision and one that is at the heart of the Harrow philosophy. Such a system allows us to create a ‘small school’ atmosphere, within a larger school structure.
The ethos of close personal tutoring is based on our aim of ensuring that each pupil has a member of staff who is ‘holistically responsible’ for him or her whilst at school. We aim to offer each pupil a personalised level of care, support and direction. By offering an effective programme of Tutor time, personal development time as well as a wide range of House events and co-curricular events, Close Personal Tutoring allows each pupil at Harrow Zhuhai to develop a broad range of skills and talents and to become well rounded, reflective and positive individuals.
Through Close Personal Tutoring, staff will take an active role in the tracking, monitoring and intervention of pupils, which will promote excellent academic progress and personal development, and provide a supportive environment in which pupils will thrive.
Child Safeguarding
A Safe School is a Successful School
Harrow schools are committed to the safety and protection of children. All staff and visitors are expected to comply with our school child protection and safeguarding policies and procedures.
Safeguarding is central to the Harrow family ethos. Our expectation is that all stakeholders share and understand this commitment. The school mission ensures that students are supported and empowered to achieve their academic and personal potential. The foundation for enabling this is a commitment to the highest Chinese moral standards and to international benchmarks for safeguarding and student wellbeing.
We provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued.
We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect, follow robust procedures which ensure that ‘at risk’ children receive effective support, protection and justice.
Our philosophy and vision are aligned with those of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Central to this is the acknowledgment that every child has basic fundamental rights; these include the right to develop and fulfil their potential, to express their opinions and be listened to, and protection from violence, abuse or neglect.
All of our staff undergo comprehensive safeguarding training and are fully vetted. Audit of the school’s safeguarding provision is regularly carried out by the International Child Protection Advisors (ICPA) who also provide ongoing training for staff.
